Wrong cover dimensions are one of the most common reasons a paperback upload gets rejected or prints badly. The good news is that the maths is simple once you know the four inputs. This guide explains how the spine width and full wraparound cover size are calculated for a paperback on Amazon KDP, shows a worked example, and links to a free calculator that does the arithmetic for you. The numbers below are the ones KDP published at the time of writing, so confirm them against KDP’s own cover calculator and template before you finalize your files.
The four inputs you need
- Trim size: the finished size of the book, for example 6 x 9 inches.
- Page count: the final number of pages, which must be fixed before you calculate the spine.
- Paper type: white or cream, and black ink or color. Thicker paper means a wider spine.
- Bleed: extra artwork that extends past the trim edge so no white edge shows after cutting. KDP asks for 0.125 inches (3.2 mm).
How to calculate the spine width
Spine width is the page count multiplied by the thickness of one page. KDP publishes a different thickness for each paper and ink combination:
| Interior type | Thickness per page (inches) |
|---|---|
| Black ink on white paper | 0.002252 |
| Black ink on cream paper | 0.0025 |
| Standard color ink on white paper | 0.002252 |
| Premium color ink on white paper | 0.002347 |
Spine width = page count x thickness per page. Round carefully: a spine that is even slightly too wide or too narrow shifts the artwork on the printed book.
How to calculate the full cover width and height
The full wraparound cover is the back cover, spine and front cover laid out flat, plus bleed on the outer edges:
- Full cover width = (trim width x 2) + spine width + 0.25 inches of bleed (0.125 inches on each outer edge)
- Full cover height = trim height + 0.25 inches of bleed (0.125 inches at the top and bottom)
A worked example
Take a 6 x 9 inch paperback with 300 pages on cream paper:
- Spine width: 300 x 0.0025 = 0.75 inches
- Full cover width: (6 x 2) + 0.75 + 0.25 = 13.0 inches
- Full cover height: 9 + 0.25 = 9.25 inches
The same book on white paper has a spine of 300 x 0.002252 = 0.676 inches, so the full cover width becomes 12.926 inches. Same book, different paper, different file size, which is why the paper type must be chosen before the cover is designed.
Safe zone, spine text and the barcode area
Keep important text and logos at least 0.25 inches inside the trim edge so nothing is cut off or sits too close to the fold. Do not rely on the bleed area to hold anything that matters.
Spine text needs enough room. KDP only supports spine text above a minimum page count (79 pages at the time of writing) and the text needs a margin on either side. Very thin books should carry the title on the front and back covers only.
If you let KDP assign a free ISBN, leave a clear area of roughly 2 x 1.2 inches on the back cover where KDP places the barcode. Keep text and busy artwork out of that space.
File requirements
- Upload the full wrap as a single print-ready PDF.
- Use images of at least 300 DPI at their final size; low-resolution images print soft.
- Embed or outline your fonts so the PDF looks the same everywhere.
- Check the result in KDP’s cover previewer, which shows the trim, bleed and spine guides.
Our free print readiness checker can also help you catch dimension, bleed and font problems before you upload.
What about the eBook cover?
The Kindle eBook cover is a separate, single-image file with its own requirements. KDP recommends a height-to-width ratio of 1.6:1, with 2,560 pixels high by 1,600 pixels wide as the ideal size and a minimum of 1,000 pixels on the longest side, saved as a JPEG or TIFF. The eBook cover has no spine and no bleed.
Mistakes that cause rejected or misaligned covers
- Designing the cover before the page count is final, then changing the page count
- Using the wrong paper type when calculating the spine
- Leaving out the bleed, which can leave a thin white edge after trimming
- Placing important text inside the bleed or too close to the trim
- Using the paperback numbers for a hardcover, which has different requirements
Calculate it in seconds
Our free cover and spine size calculator works out the spine width and the full wraparound dimensions from your trim size and page count, with the bleed already included, and gives you a printable template. It uses 0.0025 inches per page, the cream-paper figure, which is a sensible estimate; for a white-paper book, check the final spine in KDP’s calculator.
If you would rather not handle the technical side, our book cover design service delivers a print-ready wrap cover sized to your trim and page count.
Frequently asked questions
Does the spine width change if I change the page count?
Yes. Every extra page adds a small amount of thickness, so a changed page count means a new spine width and an updated cover file. Lock the page count before the cover is finished.
Are hardcover dimensions the same as paperback?
No. Hardcovers use a different cover layout and extra wrap around the boards. Use the hardcover calculator or template from your publishing platform instead of the paperback numbers.
Is IngramSpark the same as KDP?
The principles are the same, but each printer has its own paper stocks and template generator, so the spine figures differ slightly. Use the template from the platform that will print the book.
How wide is the bleed?
KDP asks for 0.125 inches (3.2 mm) of bleed on the top, bottom and outer edges of the cover.
Can I use the same cover file for the eBook?
Not directly. The eBook cover is the front cover only, exported as a separate image in the size KDP recommends, while the paperback needs the full wrap with spine and back cover.
